About

WiiCR created by Jacob Jarick (mem) is a media player solution for the Nintendo Wii. It acts as a streaming media server and is capable of transcoding nearly any video file to a suitable flv for an embedded flash player. It allows browsing of the remote filesystem to view: videos (avi/xvid/divx/mpeg/wmv/etc), text files, jpg's and play mp3s.

  • Hey guys, its mem - long time no update :P
  • First off, despite what many sites claimed the WiiCR project was never cancelled. I merely took a very long extended break from the scene (and I still am on that break). I got back to my namefix.pl project for a bit and also managed to waste large amounts of time Playing Heroes of Might and Magic eastern tribes.
  • Anyway, from the looks of several reliable sources proper Wii Homebrew is just around the corner with some clever folk figuring out the Wii Key via dumping the ram contents. Demonstration of Wiihomebrew here
  • If this takes off the way I hope, I may buy a new wii, get whatever homebrew mod is needed and step back into the scene and coding WiiCR.

  • Following Mem's cancelation of the project, I am proud to announce that WiiCR will not entirely close. Since mem has given up, WiiCR X will serve as the replacement for WiiCR.
  • I am sorry for my lack of development on WiiCR X recently. However, I would like all people who can help to report to IRC. WiiCR X will use Linux, and I would like full community involvement to make it the best that it can be.
  • To connect to IRC, please download xChat(nix Users) or mIRC(Windows) both are free to use. The IRC server is irc.freenode.net #WiiCR. Please come join us.

Navarr, still hangin in.

September 11, 2007

  • Well its been fun. Im officially retiring from development of this project with the reason being I am utterly bored with the nintendo wii software library and sick to death of the 1/2 arsed opera browser.
  • Sorry to sound bitter but I will not be buying another nintendo console, I was there for the n64 and gamecube both of which didnt share the wii's initial success but are carbon copys of the wii's pathetic game release cycle.
  • Expect to see the tired old argument "We are not focused on hardcore gamers" to be used constantly to explain: lack of games, yet another minigame compilation, xbox/ ps2/psp ports and general piss poor software library.
  • The only game I am interested in playing on the Wii in the near future is mariokart, but given that nintendo has pushed it back yet again it became the final straw for myself. I sold my wii for $300au with all original equipment so I didnt lose out to much.
  • What console next, well for my the ps3 seems ideal for several key points:
    • Web browser is actually 1/2 decent from all reports
    • linux support out the box
    • bluetooth / wireless support
    • free online gameplay etc
  • The only thing that holds me back the current price, which will drop to my acceptable level soon enough.
  • Should anyone wish to take over the project feel free. For myself it was always a curiosity seeing as I have a linux pc hooked up to my tv in the lounge.

mem out

  • Blog for WiiCR X opened. It shows minor developments and teasers. Nice to subscribe to and read every now and again.

August 8, 2007

  • Nintendo adds USB Keyboard support for Wii Message channel and Wii Shop channel. Its only a matter of time before Opera finished their latest update of the Internet Channel to use it with. Opera's most definently already started using it, considering that Wii Shop runs using the Opera engine.
  • Alternative project, WiiCR X Started. (Created by Navarr). WiiCR X uses PHP as the main system language. It has full control for Plugins, Themes, and an updater that will work with all plugins and themes. The plugin system generally uses PHP, but by using some interesting code in the main.php file can use alternative languages. The system outputs in XML and references to an XSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) which will allow the theme developer to output the XML as HTML, xHTML, or SVG. For those willing to give up the root directory on their webserver (more than likely anyone using XAMPP) will also be able to use a planned "Wii Bootloader" which will allow the user to select between booting up WiiCR, WiiCR X, or WiiCR X (safe mode). Depending on which types are available on the system. WiiCR X should also have NATIVE LINUX SUPPORT (with most features :x). More information as it is available. [Note, WiiCR X is a collaborative project with the WiiCR Team, it is in no way a rival or competition.]

  • Nintendo's E3 2007 Press Conference. Will the Wii Baransu Bado bring new possibilities to the Internet Channel? Will WiiCR have a rebirth? Stay Tuned :)

April 12, 2007

  • New browser released apparently. I havent really played much wii in the last 2 months, honestly Ive lost intrest in waiting for online games on the wii, I will be buying a PS3 later on to play with linux and Im hoping their online support will happen alot quicker than nintendos.
  • But never fear people, stop typing up that flame on the forums and read on. WiiCR has imho reached a point where it needed the new broswer. I myself enjoyed the challenge but eventually grew tired of refining my encoding options. Thankfully now that the new browser is out, we should be able to increase video quality, possibly ditch flvtool and be able to play high quality video 30 - 90 seconds after encoding has started.
  • Help WiiCR continue by testing encoder options, edit the default theme and try increasing video player size. These 2 things will improve WiiCR the most and its an easy task for any1 to take on. Submit your findings to our forums and help the community grow.
  • I have also started a new job doing linux networking stuff, very fun though I am a bit rusty. Chances are I will return to coding namefix.pl as its always been my favourite project as I use it every time I leech media / files of friends.
  • Anywaaaaay, thats my quick update for a bit more a mind dump than anything else I suppose but meh. Have a good one folks, mem will return !.
